Investing in Textiles

The [textile] industry is one of the largest and most important sectors in the economy in terms of output, foreign exchange earnings and employment in India. It contributes 20 percent of industrial production, 9 percent of excise collections, 18 percent of employment in the industrial sector, nearly 20 percent to the country’s total export earnings and 4 percent to the GDP.

Digjam

The textile outfit of SK Birla group, Birla VXL Ltd to give a boost to its readymade garment business, is planning to extend its fabrics brand Digjam to men’s apparel, group chairman Sudarshan Kumar Birla said here on September 17. – link

INTEX

A new trade fair INTEX – an international fabrics and accessories trade fair will be held from September 28th – 30th at the India Expo center in Greater Noida.

The event is supported by the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI), The Synthetic & Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council (SRTEPC), The Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council (TEXPROCIL) and the Powerloom Development and Export Promotion Council (PDEXCIL) with Textiles Committee, a Government of India Undertaking being the Knowledge Partner.

Intex is organised by Finesse Worldwide Expositions in association with The Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI) with a view to make India a sourcing and business hub for Apparel Fabrics and Accessories.

Before the quotas went off, there was a lot of hype created to the extent that textiles would shoot up to 50 per cent growth.

An interview with Mr. Akhil Jinadal, President of the Welspun group and Mr. Rajendra Hinduja, executive director from Gokaldas Exports, rebut the notion that the textile industry is in a slump, post the removal of the quota system. – link
